Rozan is one of the few NGOs in Pakistan that has developed expertise in not only raising awareness about the importance of emotional and mental health but has been providing services since beginning to those who are in need.

Rozan Counseling Help Line (RCHL) provides non-judgmental and confidential space to young people, women and children where they can call and share their concerns related to emotional, sexual and reproductive health, Violence Against Women (VAW) and girls and Child Sexual Abuse (CSA). Along with telephonic counseling, RCHL also provides in-person and email counseling services. Rozan also organizes counseling camps in the communities.

Rozan Counseling Help Line (RCHL) was initiated in 2001 in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, Center for Communications Program (JHU/CCP) initially mainly to provide young people with information and support regarding their emotional, sexual and reproductive health.  Rozan Counseling Help Line is considered as a pioneering initiative to provide counseling services to youth in Pakistan. Since 2010, RCHL has broadened the scope of its services and caters clientele from any age, gender, class or ethnic background. Till the year 2020 RCHL has received around 61,000 counseling calls from all over Pakistan.

REFERRAL NETWORK

RCHL has an extensive and ethically trained referral network consisted of professionals such as lawyers, psychiatrists, psychologists, general health practitioners based in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Karachi, Peshawar, Jehlum, Chakwal, Hyderabad, Abbottabad and Lahore.

AWARENESS RAISING

Rozan Counseling Help Line is serving as a resource of raising awareness among the general population and reducing stigmas associated with psychological, emotional and reproductive health concerns. RCHL has developed flyers, brochures, video clips and series of radio programs on issues of sexual reproductive health rights, psycho-social issues and early marriages.

CAPACITY BUILDING

Considering the past eighteen years’ experience, RCHL has been recognized as a resource center for other helplines and professionals linked to counseling services. The groups that has been trained by RCHL in providing counseling include Family Planning Association for Pakistan, Marie Stopes Society, Green Star and Punjab Youth Helpline.

To maintain the quality of counseling services, in-house training of the regular and newly hired psychologists/counselors is ensured through reading meetings and case supervisions.

RESEARCH AND DATA ANALYSIS

RCHL by virtue of its rich experience in youth counseling has been able to compile a large amount of valuable and authentic data pertaining to youth issues in Pakistan. From time to time secondary data analysis reports have been used as an advocacy tool on emotional, sexual and reproductive health issues. RCHL has conducted a secondary data analysis of calls received during the year 2010-2011. Based on the report findings, the Government of Punjab approached Rozan Counseling Help Line for the capacity building of the staff of Punjab youth helpline.

PSYCHOSOCIAL RESPONSE TO DISASTER AFFECTED COMMUNITIES

Rozan over the last 20 years have responded to various emergencies  and disasters not only by providing psychosocial first aid to those who were affected but also by training volunteers and professionals to provide psychosocial support to survivors in shelter camps, hospitals etc. Some examples of Rozan work are as follows:

Post 2005 Earthquake Psychosocial Intervention

Psychosocial First Aid to survivors in hospitals, camps and shelters directly by Rozan team of psychologists.

Mobilization and Training of volunteers on trauma, its symptoms and effects and on the basic do’s and don’ts of providing immediate psychosocial support to victims and were then placed in the various camps, hospitals and shelters.

Stress Management Workshops with Disaster field workers  working in the disaster area over long periods of time in managing their own disaster and field-related stress (or secondary trauma).

Capacity Building As part of the Gender Taskforce of the Protection Cluster, Rozan has served as a resource on gender issues for other relief organizations and developed a gender checklist, gender sensitization training and TOT modules for field workers.

Rozan worked as technical support with a number of organizations like Pakistan Red Crescent Society, Sungi Development Foundation, Omar Asghar Khan Foundation to build their capacity providing psychosocial support to women, and children.

Material Development

Rozan developed Guidelines for Psychosocial Support to Communities with special focus on women and children. These guidelines are the minimum responses that enable support workers and communities to protect and improve the mental and psychosocial well-being of disaster-affected communities. Rozan trained a number of organization in the use of these guidelines including UNFPA, PRCS, IFRC and DRC and other field staff, volunteers, health professionals and teachers in providing psychosocial support to survivors.

Post Conflict Situation

Rozan had been active in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) (2009) crisis. Major work in this area included rapid needs assessment in collaboration with UNHCR with the affected population of the IDP crisis in Jalozai camp. Interventions to address the emotional and psychological impact included training on case management with field staff at Jalozai camp; debriefing session conducted for the staff of organizations who experienced traumatic and stressful incidence.
